Kingston-area high school students will be showcasing their Direct This video contest entries tomorrow at Loyalist Collegiate, 153 Van Order Dr. This year’s contest, sponsored by the Kingston Frontenac Anti-Violence Coordinating Committee, invited participants to depict the impact of healthy relationships on their lives. Screenings will be followed by an awards ceremony for the winning entries.

A group of talented, young filmmakers were recently honoured by the non-profit Kingston Frontenac Anti-Violence Coordinating Committee for its efforts to encourage discussion among young people about healthy relationships.
The committee held a video contest entitled “Direct This!” for local secondary students and received a number of excellent videos. The finalists and winners were honoured at a special awards ceremony hosted by K-Rock’s morning crew — Sarah Crosbie and Darryl Kornicky. They were:
* Judge’s Honourable Mentions: “Boys will be Boys,” by Adair Sugrue, Mic Baudand Reid Cunninghamof Loyalist Collegiate; “White & Black,” by GrahamandAndrew Slaughter, Eric HurtandSam Humeof Holy Cross Secondary School; “Talk to Someone,” byJesse GravelineandKatie Scottof Sydenham High School; “Young Men,” bySage Irwin, Sierra Chaykowski, Kat Rush, Carrie Sequin, Tai JacobandGabe Newmahtganof Loyalist.

Remembering Victims of Domestic Violence

Local victims of domestic violence were remembered on Monday at a dedication of a memorial plaque at Kingston Police Headquarters.

Ontario SPCA Family Violence Assistance Program

Nearly ten years ago the Ontario SPCA’s Provincial Anti-Violence Coalition conducted a Women’s Shelter Survey to explore the connection between the abuse of pets and human domestic violence – and the results were startling.
Sixty-one percent of respondents had pets harmed and/or killed by an abusive partner. As well, 48 percent confirmed that they had delayed leaving an abusive situation for fear of leaving helpless pets behind.

TODAY, THE NAMES OF THOSE WHO DIED FAR TOO EARLY WERE UNVEILED ON A PLAQUE IN FRONT OF THE POLICE HEADQUARTERS ON DIVISION STREET
