Working Therapeutically with Survivors of Internet Child Exploitation

April 7, 2017 @ 9:00 am - 12:00 pm

Workshop Description

The rise of technology in our society has tragically brought with it a dramatic increase in the prevalence of online child exploitation. Although survivors of internet child exploitation often present with similar symptoms and struggles of those who were abused by an “in-the-room perpetrator”, there are unique aspects involved with online abuse and exploitation that have important implications for professionals working with these young survivors.

Marcella Leonard, a leading expert from the United Kingdom, joins us via webinar for a thought-provoking lecture on how to effectively work with survivors of online child exploitation. The second half of the workshop will include an interactive presentation by therapists at our Centre, Seonida Andrews and Joan Boyd, Registered Psychotherapists, who have over 25 years experience working with survivors of the devastating crimes of child exploitation. The workshop is designed to give attendees practical useful examples on how to assess and appropriately support client survivors. We will focus on short-term interventions, immediate safety concerns, safety from triggering situations and issues for the future. We will present case examples for the audience to discuss and examine.

Marcella Leonard is an expert with specialized training and experience in the fields of sexual trauma, psychosexual therapy, sexual offending and child protection. Although based in Northern Ireland, Marcella is frequently abroad providing training and consultancy to organizations worldwide. She is an independent social work consultant and social worker with over 25 years of experience working in the mental health field. Marcella founded Leonard Consultancy, an independent organisation which provides training, consultancy and practice to criminal justice, child protection, religious, educational, social care organizations and academic institutions.
